Ceramics and Terra Cotta from Thailand: in
Pagao, a village in the north of Thailand, there has existed
a tradition of making Terra Cotta since time immemorial. The
fortified brick walls and temples of Chiang Saen, the first
capital of Thailand, some of which date from more than 800 years
ago, are not far away.
Many of these brick walls and buildings, often paved with Terra
Cotta tiles, have resisted in a remarkable fashion, not only time itself but countless
wars and the incredible monsoons experienced in this country.
With the advent of cement blocks and roof tiles, the
tileries of the area fell into disrepair or disappeared. However, some years ago thanks to
the farsightedness and tenacity of some local craftsmen, the old tradition of producing
hand made tiles was revived.
Today, thanks to a new found appreciation of beautiful
workmanship, Pagaos tiles are to be found in many widely different places such as
hotels, offices, superstores and private houses. The tilery is now resolutely confident
that a future also lies with the export of its products entirely made by hand.
