Phuket
has recently developed a world wide reputation as a sailing
and yachting destination. In large part, this recognition is
because of the King's Cup Regatta which was launched in 1987
to commemorate the 60th birthday, or 5th cycle, of His Majesty,
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, himself an award winning sailor.
This
year, the annual Regatta will start on 5 December with a practice
race off Ao Nang Beach in neighboring Krabi Province and will
finish on 11 December with a major closing party at the Kata
Beach Resort.
A
Regatta start in Krabi Province will highlight the natural beauty
of the Phang Nga Bay with its dramatic limestone formations.
1999
is again a special year as it is His Majesty's 6th cycle birthday
and will be the thirteenth year with more entries from more
countries.
The
1998 Regatta event saw a record 81 boats and yachts entering
the six different classes of competition including racing, cruising
and classic sailing yachts. More than 600 participants and 1000
guests enjoyed splendid sailing and parties which focused on
Kata Beach.
The
King's Cup Regatta is supported by the Royal Thai Navy and the
Sports Authority of Thailand as well as many provincial authorities
and immigration and customs which makes it a truly national
event. Regatta President Nigel Hardy recently announced that
Iridium, a global communications technology corporation will
serve as principal sponsor for 1999 and the Phuket celebrations
will be centered at the Kata Beach Resort and the Boathouse
Wine and Grill.
"The
King's Cup Regatta is always great fun and is developing an
international reputation with media coverage in America, Belgium,
Japan, Italy, Germany and Great Britain," commented Phuket
Yacht Club Commodore David Ratcliffe.
