Phuket spas: Jungle Saunas

 Jungle Saunas

For many centuries, the peoples of what is now Thailand understood the value of steam saunas where local herbs were used to clean the lungs, purify the blood and revive circulation.

These saunas were built in jungles, fired by wood and were often part of a therapy program which included a massage that combined ancient Indian techniques with muscle relaxing pressures.

Twenty years ago, a Thai temple at Nai Harn Beach on Phuket was the only place on the island for a healing herbal sauna.

Today, visitors to Phuket have numerous choices to get a refreshing sauna and massage. While the island has some of the world's top class spa centers, for those on a budget or just wanting to experience a Thai sauna the same way as local people, look for a sign that says herbal sauna by the side of the road and check it out.

For what is often less than 100 Baht, you can join in the sauna experience. You will be given a towel, a sarong and a small bowl with which you splash cool water over your head and body after spending a comfortable amount of time in the sauna.
