Most Phuket residents can claim a heritage from Mainland China
but over the centuries, many of the healing arts did not make it
to the island. Bangkok Phuket Hospital has introduced an Acupuncture
Clinic which provides this traditional Chinese medical art with
Dr. Wang Peng Qin who has practiced acupuncture at Liao Ning Hospital
in Northern China for fifteen years.
"I grew up near a hospital which practiced acupuncture and
I noticed how patients improved after treatment. This encouraged
my interest to pursue acupuncture as my healing vocation,"
Dr. Wang commented.
Dr. Wang speaks English and Thai but she really gets to know her
patients by listening to their pulses which indicate how the physical
body is functioning.
According to this Chinese system of healing which has been practiced
for at least 2000 years, energy flows around the body in a series
of meridiens. When these energies becomes blocked, then illness
is the result.
Peter Brown is a consulting engineer from Scotland who works around
the world. Recently, he visited Dr. Wang for what he called a "tune
up".
"I've had allergies all my life and spent years going to medical
doctors with no relief. It was only when an osteopath suggested
that I try acupuncture that I found myself free of allergies and
sinus problems," stated Mr. Brown.
Medical scientists explain that the insertion of small needles
into specific points of the body helps stimulate the nervous system
to release chemicals, including endorphins, into the muscles, spinal
cord and brain to regulate the body's internal systems, ease pain
and reduce blood pressure and mental agitation. Dr. Wang listens
to her patient's problems and then examines the body looking for
signs of illness not considered by Western medicine. She then artfully
inserts tiny needles which only give a brief sting before the healing
begins. She treats insomnia, muscle and joint pain, gastro-enteritis,
allergies, impotence and of course, the "tune up".
Five sessions with Dr. Wang are a modest 2,600 Baht and an excellent
choice for exploring remedies for chronic pain.
