Somchai Silapanont has created a tropical paradise on the headland
between Kata and Karon beaches. His success at the Marina Cottage
Resort and neighboring Dino Park miniature golf and themed restaurant,
are due in part to the beauty he has created in the tropical gardens
and water parks which landscape the property. He consulted with
Acharn Pruchya Arporn, an art teacher at the local Teacher's College
on how to create the tropical jungles which both excite and relax
visitors to Khun Somchai's attractions.
"We like the jungle style of design used on the property.
Not only is it beautiful but nature takes care of half the maintenance
while our gardeners look after the rest," smiled Acharn Pruchya.
"I've built waterfalls at both Dino Park and in the adjacent
outdoor restaurant as I think my guests will love to hear the sound
of falling water," commented Khun Somchai. He has built the
highest waterfall in the Kata area which turns into meandering streams
over which guests walk on bridges to reach their tables. In Dino
Park, the waterfall shoots out of the volcano. Golfers can
walk behind and under the waterfall as part of the excitement of
their game of mini-golf.
And next door at Marina Cottage, his swimming pool has the most
natural design where large granite boulders excavated from the site
during construction were placed naturally around the pool.
Acharn Pruchya teaches painting, sculpture and graphic design at
his college but he is happiest when designing landscapes which play
with plants and water.
"I describe to our gardeners the colors, shapes and forms
I want with the plants after I've made a drawing of where I want
the water ponds placed," he continued, "we use a lot of
water here for the feeling of moisture and of course the beautiful
views.
