Phuket volunteer veterinarian for stray dog and stray cat sterilization

Dr. Alison Montgomery graduated with honors from Sydney University in 1994. After working for several years in city, small animal practice she and her husband decided to jump on the bandwagon that takes young aussie vets to the UK. However they never made it. A six day stop over in tropical Thailand( it was their honeymoon) became a two year labour of love whereby Alison worked voluntary to change the plight of the Phuket's stray cats & dogs. During those two years she also travelled extensively throughout S.E. Asia including two months in Bali working with the Bali Street Dog Foundation. Alison returned to Australia and worked with the Victorian RSPCA in Melbourne but decided that she had not fulfilled her goals in Phuket and so returned to found the Atigaro Project. She and her husband now live in Hong Kong where she contiues to co-ordinate the Atigaro Project.

The Atigaro Project was an excellent experience in a number of ways. Firstly, it allowed us to work and live in Phuket, albeit for a short time. Although Phuket is a major holiday destination, by working with the Atigaro project we got to meet and work with ordinary Thais. Additionally, I felt that we were really doing some good the animals we were caring for - the dogs and cats all benefit from neutering. Lastly taking part in the Atigaro Project greatly improved our surgical expertise.

Wow! A surreal surgical experience - standing on the beach or outside temples speying cats and dogs. The people who assisted varied from Thais, ex pat volunteers, monks, female monks, as well as interested tourists. What a way to get to know a special part of Thailand - from all different aspects. It really added to our knowledge and experience of the country from monks to lady boys, exclusive resorts to mangy mutts, corrupt politicians to volunteer groups, all living chaotically together. I'll never forget the wide open Thai smile - or the fantastic food served every lunch time! Thanks is very much due to Ali and the Atigaro Project for an unforgettable time.

" From heidrun...The Atigaro Project is the best chance to get experience in animal welfare in a leisure environment-
Don't miss it!"
